Safety data sheet for dangerous goods for air transportation: all about the document

Air transportation is a fast and reliable way to send cargo anywhere in the world. To avoid issues with customs clearance, suppliers are required to follow the rules for transporting dangerous goods by air.

There are 9 classes of hazardous materials classification, and each requires special packaging. If transportation conditions are violated, certain goods may pose a threat to the lives of transport service employees. They can also harm the environment and damage the aircraft. A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is required for the air shipment of dangerous goods.

General Rules for the Air Transportation of Dangerous Goods

The transportation of dangerous goods is carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the regulatory acts of Ukraine. Items that fall under one of the nine hazard classifications are required to be accompanied by several supporting documents.

• Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). The accuracy and correctness of the completed document determine the further conditions of transportation.
• Declaration – the document format depends on the classification of the cargo.
• Special packaging with labeling that corresponds to the hazard class of the item.
• A document confirming the airline’s consent to transport the dangerous goods.

Some types of cargo are strictly prohibited from being transported by air. Before preparing documentation, it is important to thoroughly review the classification or contact airline representatives to confirm the air transport of hazardous materials and collect the accompanying documentation required by the carrier.

What Types of Cargo Are Classified as Dangerous?

The classification is extensive, and a complete list of items can be found in the Air Code of Ukraine as well as on the IATA website.

This classification includes explosive materials, flammable liquids, corrosive and toxic substances, oxidizing materials, and pressurized gases. A safety data sheet allows the shipment of such goods by air. Some of the main items considered hazardous include:

• Lithium-ion batteries;
• Hydrogen peroxide, nitrate, and bleach;
• Paint products, industrial solvents;
• Aerosols and lighters;
• Heating elements, pyrotechnic products;
• Radioactive substances.

The sender, whether a physical or legal entity, is fully responsible for the air transport of dangerous goods and any potential damage that may be caused during transit. The absence of proper labeling on the parcel’s packaging constitutes a violation of the law, which may result in criminal liability in the event of an air disaster or fatality.

What Is a Material Safety Data Sheet?

It is a technical document that provides information on the storage, use, and disposal of hazardous items. The sections of the MSDS must be completed in accordance with national, European, and international regulations: DSTU GOST 30333:2009, DSTU GOST 31340:2009, ISO 11014:2009, and EU Regulation No. 1272/2008. The safety data sheet must be prepared before air transportation begins.

The document includes the following sections:

• Product name;
• Supplier and manufacturer information;
• Prevention of emergencies;
• First aid measures in case of emergencies;
• Key transport and storage conditions;
• Environmental impact, toxicity class;
• Safety precautions when handling the hazardous product;
• Compliance document in accordance with Ukrainian law and international standards.
