How to ship fragile items

From time to time, we face the need to ship or transport fragile goods. It can be not only antiques or glassware, but also interior items, appliances, musical instruments, etc. To ensure that such parcels arrive at their destination undamaged, you should follow a number of simple recommendations.

What is considered fragile cargo?

Things, objects or materials that require careful packaging, appropriate labelling and careful handling during transport should be considered fragile. This category includes:

• dishes and tableware, glass bottles;
• interior items, statuettes, vases, mirrors, clocks;
• office and household appliances, devices, mechanisms;
• musical instruments;
• antiques and antiques;
• some construction materials (for example, plasterboard, stained glass or mosaics, tiles);

How to pack fragile things?

You will need rigid packaging that will immobilize the cargo and protect it from damage – cracks, scratches, breakage. Take a dense box of the appropriate size. Wrap the item you are shipping in paper, bubble wrap, or plastic wrap. Use additional cushioning – corrugated paper, bubble wrap, foam to completely fill the box with the item. A popular life hack advises using mounting foam to fill cavities in the box when packing dishes or other fragile items. Some cargoes (paintings, building materials) are transported on a wooden crate.

Securely seal the box with tape (preferably reinforced) at all joints. This will provide additional protection for the outer packaging.

How to mark fragile parcels?

Use the appropriate labelling – mark the top, front of the box that this shipment is fragile and requires careful handling. Be sure to mark the top of the package with appropriate arrows. Use coloured tape or warning labels to draw attention to the category of your parcel.

Include a waybill (sales receipt) and address/contact information for the sender and recipient in case the outer label falls off or gets dirty.
