Air freight rates from Asia to Europe are rising again after several weeks of volatility. According to TAC Index, the global Baltic Air Freight Index (BAI00) as of August 24, 2026, remains 21% higher than a year ago.
How have air freight rates changed?
The trend varies depending on the specific hub and route, but rates on key Asian routes remain significantly higher than a year ago.
According to TAC Index, year over year:
- Hong Kong (BAI30): +22.8%;
- Shanghai (BAI80): +18.5%;
- global BAI00: +21%.
Rates from China to Europe strengthened, while rates to the US declined slightly. Rates from Taiwan increased in both directions. Air freight to Europe from Bangkok and Hanoi also became more expensive.
Why does air freight remain expensive?
TAC Index identifies several factors that continue to keep rates elevated:
- Tensions in the Middle East
- Disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz
- High aviation fuel costs
What does this mean for businesses?
If you are planning imports from Asia for Q4 2026, factor current freight rates into your costs rather than relying on last year’s levels. The difference is already significant.
It is also important to keep in mind that the current high rate environment reflects broader market dynamics rather than a decision by any individual carrier.
