How to transport dangerous goods
Dangerous goods, or objects, substances or goods that can cause damage, must be transported in a manner that is consistent with the packaging and transport regulations. This will greatly reduce the risk of damage to the goods themselves and damage to other people or the environment.
How to prepare dangerous goods for shipment?
It is you, the shipper, who is responsible for ensuring that dangerous goods are properly classified, declared, packaged and labelled in accordance with customs control requirements. This may include documents of origin, as well as relevant certificates for transit or destination countries. For more information on the classification of your goods, please contact the manufacturer or supplier.
How to ship dangerous goods correctly?
There are requirements for the type of packaging, accompanying documentation, and labelling that are necessary for the correct (safe) transportation of this category of goods.
Pay attention! Depending on the type of transport, the rules of transportation may differ slightly. Therefore, be sure to clarify this point with your carrier before sending the goods or substances.
Rules for shipping dangerous goods:
- Appropriate packaging. For any products or substances that may be dangerous, boxes with a specification marking must be used, which confirms that such packaging has been tested and can be used for the transport of dangerous goods. A separate marking is used for each class of such cargo!
- Reliable packaging. Use additional protective material to prevent damage/leakage/deformation of dangerous goods. For example, plastic bags or several layers of film around the goods, which should be sealed with tape or tightened with cable ties. And the empty space in the box can be filled with vermiculite, foam, corrugated paper, etc. Securely seal the box with several layers of tape or reinforced packing tape.
- Attach the correct labels to the package (according to the classification of dangerous goods) and do not forget to indicate the details of the sender and recipient. If necessary, mark the top of the box so that it is transported in the correct position.
- Do not forget to add the appropriate documentation to the package.
As you can see, these recommendations are not difficult to follow. And you will be sure that your cargo will leave for its destination and reach it without any obstacles or delays.
