How to send precious and semi-precious stones and metals abroad
The shipment of precious and semi-precious stones abroad is regulated by the customs legislation of Ukraine. The customs clearance of such cargo is provided for in a special document that defines the procedure for the shipment of precious metals, semi-precious and precious stones.
Concept and Customs Procedures for Transporting Precious Metals and Stones
Precious stones typically refer to minerals naturally mined, rather than man-made. Among them, notable examples include rubies, sapphires, diamonds, alexandrites, and pearls in their raw form.
Precious metals include gold, platinum, silver, ruthenium, iridium, osmium, palladium, and rhodium. These metals are resistant to corrosion and are characterized by their shine and noble beauty. They are rare in nature, making them highly valuable.
Semi-precious stones are minerals that can be found in various locations and come in a wide range of species, making them considerably less expensive. They are commonly used in creating jewelry and other products.
Precious metals, gems, and semi-precious stones sent abroad must go through special customs procedures at designated customs posts. There are specific customs regimes for processing these goods either within the customs territory or outside of it.
Features of Transportation
Here are some important points to consider when sending precious metals, precious, and semi-precious stones abroad:
- It is necessary to obtain government approval for sending unique raw stones. Other types are shipped according to the quotas set by the government. The metals and stones being exported must meet the standards accepted by Ukraine and the London Bullion Market Association.
- The export of processed and unprocessed precious metals and stones is carried out in amounts not exceeding 10,000 euros, according to the provisions of the Customs Code of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers Resolution dated 21.05.2021.
- These same regulations govern the export of precious metals and items made from them from Ukraine.
It is important to note that Ukrainian legislation prohibits the export of precious metal ores, scrap metals, and bank metals. Diamonds or gems are transported beyond Ukraine’s borders according to Article 373 of the Customs Code.
Sending precious metals, semi-precious and precious stones is complex because these minerals are of high value. They cannot be transported in a regular vehicle, as this is prohibited by law.
Such valuable cargo is best shipped in armored vehicles with additional security. Regular transport companies do not have such vehicles, so these will need to be hired. To export this valuable cargo, you must:
- Complete all documents issued by authorized state bodies. In addition to licenses and other permits, you must also obtain documents granting permission to export the valuables from the country.
- Properly pack the items. It is crucial to package the valuables carefully so that they arrive intact and undamaged at their destination.
There are also other nuances to consider, such as determining the most efficient route for the “time-money” dilemma.

When sending precious metals, semi-precious and precious stones abroad, it is necessary to arrange insurance for all these valuables. This will allow you to receive full compensation in case the valuable cargo is stolen or damaged.
