Transportation of animals abroad: how to transport and what is needed
Many people want to take their pets with them when they travel to another country, but they will have to face some difficulties that are difficult to predict. Although this is a completely achievable goal.
Of course, all countries are afraid that animals will bring infections with them, so the rules for their importation have been tightened. There are several steps to be taken to achieve this.
Study the Country’s Requirements
In many countries, the regulations governing the import of pets vary. Some countries have a high infection risk and practically do not allow the import of animals. In countries where pet importation is permitted, authorities require full compliance with their regulations. You can find this information on the websites of the relevant authorities in the destination country.
Australia has the strictest veterinary services – they require all vaccinations and examinations to be completed in an accredited country. However, even when the pet is allowed entry, it must undergo a 10-day quarantine period.
In Israel, in addition to rabies vaccination, authorities require a blood test for antibodies. In the UK, animals can only be transported as cargo in the luggage compartment and only by a licensed carrier. Before traveling to Thailand, you must notify the regulatory authorities and obtain a permit.
Choose a Place to Stay
This should also be considered in advance, as each country has its own rules not only for pet importation. Not every hotel will allow guests with a dog or cat, fearing property damage. Also, neighbors may be allergic to animal fur.
Therefore, when booking a hotel room or rental property, be sure to find out whether pets are allowed and clarify all conditions. Note that there is often an extra charge for pet accommodation.
How to Transport and Fly with Your Pet
There are two main options for transporting pets:
- in the cabin;
- in the cargo hold.
Pets up to 8 kg are usually allowed in the cabin. The animal must be in a special carrier. One adult is allowed to carry one pet in a carrier. But keep in mind that pets with a strong odor may be denied entry into the cabin.
In the cargo hold, airlines provide the necessary conditions for the animal’s comfort. The compartment is sealed, well-heated, and carriers can be securely fixed. For pets weighing more than 45–50 kg, a cargo transport agreement must be arranged.
Documents
You will need a veterinary passport for your pet, containing all vaccination and examination records. In addition, you must obtain an export permit – Veterinary Certificate No. 1.
This certificate is issued by state veterinary clinics. It includes information about the pet, the owner, and the travel destination.
Experts recommend that owners of pedigree animals obtain a certificate stating the animal will not be used for breeding to avoid suspicion of exporting rare breeds. If your pet is a valuable breed, it’s better not to mention it. However, at exhibitions, proof may be required.
You must also inform the airline and obtain its approval. All documents should be sent by email.
As you can see, traveling abroad with a pet is entirely possible. However, you will need to gather the required documents, coordinate with companies, ensure all vaccinations are completed, and meet the necessary legal requirements. Be sure to study the import rules of the destination country and book pet-friendly accommodation in advance.
